BioPod pre-owned sales
This page is here to serve anyone who wants to sell their used BioPod. If you wish to sell yours please post about it as a comment for this page. I don’t recommend posting your email address in a comment because of spambots. If you’re a buyer and would like to contact a seller I’m willing to serve as an intermediary. Just contact me and I will pass your request on to the owner. This service is free and pricing, shipping, etc are all up to the buyers and sellers, I’m just providing the advertising. I’ll even allow people who didn’t purchase their BioPod from me to use this page, I’m nice like that.
Sellers should describe the condition of their units as thoroughly as possible and photos would be very helpful.
You probably need to scroll way down to find the comment box.
For shipping I recommend USPS Parcel Post. It’s not the fastest but it’s the cheapest I know off. You’ll need a box that doesn’t exceed 24 X 24 X 18 inches which is the largest the Post Office will handle (check to be sure).

I’m thinking I should sell my BSF Biopod since it seems that my climate here (central Wisconsin) is just a bit too cold for them. I like the idea, and my chickens were just getting big enough to like the larvae when the weather chilled out enough to more or less stop production. I’ve only used it one Summer, so there’s no real wear and tear on it. I’d like to get $125 plus shipping.
Hi Harmon,
I’m interested in buying your Biopod, but I live in Europe. If you’re prepared to ship it here, and assuming it’s not insanely expensive to do so, I’d be keen.
Let me know if you’re interested.
Cheers, Alan
Sharon, I’ve emailed Harmon that you’re interested.
Sorry, Alan, but I don’t think I want to try to ship to Europe — used insect breeders are likely to cause all sorts of hassles with customs.
hi, I am very interested in the unit. please contact me.
I’ve decided NOT to sell my Biopod. My wife and I just read an article on them in the Backyard Poultry magazine, and it convinced us that we needed to give ours another try, with a little more attention paid to management and hopefully next Summer will be warmer again.
Harmon I’m glad you’re going to give it another shot next summer. Please contact me when the days start getting into the 70′s and I’ll be glad to advise you.
Hi,
I’m interested in a unit. also Anyone have experience in NE Iowa? Where can i get some insects to start my colony?
Tom
Hi Tom,
Clearly you would have an easier time if you a little further south. While I’ve seen photos of BSF from central Illinois and heard of populations in Idaho and Washington state I can’t say for sure that they are found in your area. Of course it’s still possible to culture BSF where they aren’t already present, but it’s more difficult.
I sell BSF starter kits which should be available in late April or May. With a short summer you would need to begin as early as possible.
Hello Folks, I live in east TN and we are interested in a used BSF biopod. I assume they will do well here – right? thanks.
Hi Dave,
I’ve heard of wild BSF populations in TN and also KY so you should have a relatively easy time attracting and raising them. Good luck!
Would love to get my hands on a used BioPod or the larger unit to generate feed for my chickens. I live in Tucson,Az. Love any advice also for raising BSF in our hot dry climate.
Hi Darlene,
Wild BSF are found in Arizona so attracting and culturing them should be fairly straightforward. Since it gets pretty hot there you would need to carefully monitor the internal temperature of a colony. On very hot days it’s often helpful to leave the lid off of whatever container you’re using. Of course you would need to keep the unit in full shade at all times. The larvae do need a humid environment inside of the BSF unit. Normally the food waste will provide sufficient moisture, but if your waste is on the dry side you may need to add small amounts of water. In most areas we have the opposite problem with the compost being too wet.
Why not try operating my DIY unit until you can find a used BioPod? I’m hoping that a lot of people will test this new design out and help refine it.
I will be trying to set up a pilot aquaponics system along with black soldier flies and red worms in the Tucson area. Any help from folks in the area that actually have a system in operation would be of great help. As we build proto type equipment we will be happy to share our results.
Richard…
Hi Richard,
A group of friends and myself are moving in the same direction as you are (aquaponics, BSF, and Red Wiggler Worms), but we are only now getting the materials together and it will be while before we have any successes/failures to report to the community. Still, I wanted to write you a comment just to let you know that we are interested in your progress – we are in El Paso, so any climate adaptations that you make for your systems of fish, veggies, flies, or worms would probably be appropriate for our climate as well. Good luck,
-Paul
I’ve got a bio-pod (the first generation, not the new one) that I bought probably a year and a half ago. I just don’t have the time to really do the experimenting to keep it going through the winter. I’m sure with some tweaking and attention and care, it could be really successful, I just have higher priorities at the moment. So up for sale goes the bio-pod, hopefully someone else can get some good use out of it! It’s in great shape, (not that there’s much that can go wrong). I’ll even leave what grubs are in there for the new owner if someone local buys it. (assuming the rat we recently discovered dining in it hasn’t finished them off…) I’ll put it up for $125 or best offer. I’d like to sell to someone local if possible (NW Oregon/SW Washington). But will consider shipping if need be.
Thanks!
- Joseph
