what if the mad maggot gangs (ht Tarvus) offered us a Modest Proposal ala Swift. Either we get our act together or they're comin' for us!! Maybe we could stream them all that 40% food waste BEFORE it goes through the laborious process of ending up in landfills, pre-consumer and fresh. Grocery stores...

BW - Makes me think it could be beneficial to mist them with Willard Water before they go into the pupation bins. It has very interesting properties when it comes to hydration, among many other things. I've been using it for 25 years and have a hundred stories from friends, family, pets, plants and ...

Hiccup - we're having the same problem here in Texas. I thought I had a great idea by turning a couple of water jugs into fly traps with some raw chicken in the bottom and cone-funnel tops. I caught a mess of flies the first day with these and then even more on the second as they started stinking. B...

Did I read somewhere that they need some moisture while pupating? I had a very dry coir bin for that in the past and they seemed to do just fine. I'd go out in the morning and there'd be 50 newly hatched hanging out prior to their maiden voyage. Thanks in advance.

Here's my temporary "pressure solution". Can't tell if they're still scooting around below, but there aren't too many along the edges any longer.

BW - great idea if it had been designed-in from the start, but too complicated at this point. I really think that the other factors of aeration and drainage of waste material are significant and make the daily chore worth the effort. If we can make it through the summer without a colony collapse I'l...

thanks BW - I think PeteB's approach will work for me. I'm going to take some plywood and drill a bunch of one-inch holes for fly emergence and place it on the pine shavings with a brick or two on it for weight. I'm pupating in the long black plastic cement tubs, so it'll be a snap to modify them. T...

Had to make a special trip home yesterday to drench the bins. It hit 106 degrees here in Hays County. The outdoor pupation bin measured 104 in the shade so I brought it inside. Hope they make it. I think I'll just let them pupate indoors. I'm building a lightweight cage that goes over their bins for...

EnviroFlight was featured in Bloomberg Magazine's June 17 - June 23 issue (page 32).

Heard CNN is doing something in late July on his operation.

Thanks BorealWormer, appreciate it.

I'm with you on the raw thing. No way, until I have to.
I took some balsamic vinegar and himalayan sea salt, thinking that might a tasty cooking mix.
Maybe next time 8-)

The kids squealed when he popped one of these in his mouth and chewed it up. One woman put her face in her hands and sought comfort in her husbands arms.

What a hoot. Pretty large crowd. Maybe 150 people, lots of children. The main presenter gave a thorough talk about eating bugs with many fascinating details. Both he and Marjory ate a couple of BSF larvae right out of the bag. I was waiting until he got to the cooking stage for mine but had to leave...

Moved from photo gallery ( link ). BW Great thread and pictures y'all, just discovered it this morning. I think this is where I'll send folks to get a quick view of things BSF related. Might even print up some cards to make it easy. Lately I've been writing on the back of business cards to send peo...

Wow, thank you Agropisa, Tarvus and BW!!!!!! I think I stopped posting and reading back when I had multiple colony collapses in 2011, just after I posted on this thread. I'm going to put a dusting of Azomite in my bins later on. That was some great reading, your empirical inquisitiveness and observa...

Jerry, I've observed that the coir in my bins ends up on top, even when I start with the bin with a layer of coir on the bottom. It doesn't get as incorporated as I'd like and I'm wondering if it ends up as an insulator, keeping the heat generated below higher. I'm using the coarse version of coir. ...

Here's a few more pictures. The grubs have two ways to get to their pails now. Had the opportunity to get a pic of the last skin shed.
