I did end up FINALLY re-establishing a bin of wild BSFL. For some reason it took a long time this year. Although, I am not convinced the pictured larvae were BSFL. I had a lot of standard house fly larvae also hatching in my bin before the BSFL were established.

I recently read another post where someone experimented with an electrified boundary to contain the BSFL, similar to what some have done with worm bins. It was simply two strips of metal tape spaced ~1/8" apart, around the inside top edge of the container, connected to either pole of a 9V batte...

I've had a heck of a time cultivating some wild BSF this year. I've seen a select few egg clutches laid, but they never seemed to hatch. I suspect perhaps not the right humidity, either too dry or too wet (is too wet possible?) I didn't have this much trouble last year, using similar bait (fairly ro...

There's been some discussion of a type of bin that is made up of layered/stacked same-size modules, each with wire mesh/screen on the bottom. As I understand it, BSFL seem to live mostly in a top layer of material (not sure the exact depth, maybe 6" or so?). So, if each module in the stack was ...

I like Jerry's method of using certain types of difficult-to-eat foods for "vacation feeding". But for the REALLY hard or dense organic materials like the above-mentioned foods, or bones, avocado seeds, etc.... I toss it in the blender and puree it (or Vitamix if you have one - it literall...

I'm somewhat fascinated by the larvae's crawl-off behavior. One thing I'm particularly interested in, is whether they exhibit any patterns in their crawl-off 'path'? In looking at some of the great pictures available (like those provided by Jerry and Tarvis), it almost seems like the larvae, more of...

Hey, that's a good point Jerry. There may be occasions when slower feeding is desirable. I was thinking in the context of a producing enough to serve as a significant feed component for my chickens, so I was going for maximum production. Do you think there are some materials (like bones) that would ...

Medford, Oregon http://grojguys.com/images/2011%20first%20BSF%20eggs!.jpg We've had a very late Spring here, and I've had my garbage bin sitting outside for about a month. Finally the last week or two has consistently reached 70-80 degrees F, and today I was excited to spot the first bunch of BSF eg...

Has anyone experimented with 'pre-processing' what they feed to the BSF larvae? Last summer, I had a quite a mixture of various kitchen and garden scraps, some of which I believe to be unconsumable by the larvae, due to size, hardness, or cellulose nature. For example, egg shells. Or various seeds, ...

MattB, great thread! I am very interested in your idea/concept. And thanks Jerry for your excellent feedback. I have been thinking about very similar ideas regarding a "flow-through" combination worm/BSF system. I have read the exchange of ideas so far. I have only raised BSF's on a small ...

Hello all, just a quick intro here from southern Oregon. I've been experimenting with worms for 5 or so years, and BSF's for the last 2. I had no trouble attracting and maintaining a nice colony of wild/native BSF's last summer. I used a standard plastic storage bin, filled with REALLY ripe 'sludge'...
