Thanks PeteB. Would you say the important feature here is the multiple downward facing sections (flanges) which would cause the larva to lose their grip?

BW, it's rather difficult to observe what happens down there . What I do see is the three inner 'flanges' get brown and grubby, and the outer one stays white. They obviously never get that far. I guess it's the same with Velcro, they've got no surface tension to work with, and gravity does the rest.
