back to the flies
I have not had time for the aquaponics or the soldier fly
about a week ago I collected over 4 days 8+ clusters of eggs
and put the cluster all into a bucket with food
this is the small larvae

Post Re: The fly has bitten
lots of larvae
As for the bsf......I don't have the space and I am very close to the boundary wall...the smell in the bins where I attract the flies to lay eggs is a worry to me...........feeding the larvae is also becoming a problem...I need too much food to feed and keep the larvae I have right now...and then I have been collecting egg cluster every day and that I have in a separate bucket to hatch....I already have my hands full and there is still a few months left of the cycle.....

Gorgeous vegetables as usual francois. :D

Depending on your goals for the BSF, I don't think it would be a problem to reduce the amount of food you give them. My guess is that they would either take longer to develop, mature at a smaller size, or both. If this isn't an issue for you then you can simply give them what you have without worry. I think that reduced feeding would probably result in less egg laying which would have a re-balancing effect on the size of your colony.

About the smell that's concerning you; I encourage you to build a system using my drainage system. With 5-10 minutes of effort every day to flush your composter with water (or less frequently depending on how heavily you feed) you will have no issues with bad odors. If you have any questions about construction please feel free to ask.

Hi Jerry
took your advise and i have started flushing the system with water from top every few days and it helps with smell, the system does have a drain so it works well
thanks
francois

Post Re: The fly has bitten
been a while.
I am still messing around with growing celery.
grows well not much of a mission...I am not sure if there is
really a market for celery but if there is it be a good crop to grow
I would say a good crop to experiment with when you start off...

Post Re: The fly has bitten
Update on the plant..celery in system. I have had a aphid problem with the celery and I have been trying and to some extent controlling them organically...now I am running away from the problem...had enough and I am happy with the results growing celery......move onto something else. I want to remove the celery and clean the rafts and re plant lettuce seedling I am growing

As far as the bsf...all going fine and I am very happy with the results I am getting so far.
My bsf larvae bin...lots of larvae. I have started feeding a dryer mixture.
This 600 grams collected over a few days.
ready to be sold
