Post Cultivation in Bowen, Nth QLD, Australia
Posts below were split off from the Range and Identification section (link) Admin

I won't be able to help out much in future as I'm a wandering Nomad... I'm retired and travelling with no set plans or timetable.

I should think that there are no seasons for these insects in the Tropics because its always warm even in the evenings near the coast.

I just inspected my cardboard rolls... there were 18 deposits of eggs 3 or 4 days ago which appear to be starting to hatch. There are 3 new deposits on those rolls and 4 deposits on 2 new pieces of cardboard I put out today.

There appear to be 3 or 4 females about each day... near my wine fermenter. I have no idea how many are laying eggs in my blue bin.

I'm hatching these deposits out in a new bucket with fermented crushed grains in it so hopefully it will be writhing with BSFL in 2 weeks... if so I'll update with new pics.

Any plastic container can be a fermenter, or you can buy one. You can use a bucket with a loose fitting lid (to allow the carbon dioxide to escape).
A purpose built fermenter has a fitted lid with an airlock. Brew shops sell them... a 30 litre with airlock will cost about $25 to $30.

You can use mangoes or any fruits/vegetables for that matter.

When this brew is finished I'm going to make a mango wine.

Thanks, shall experiment with the loose lid idea to attract the females.

Yup, they go for the mangoes!

I wasn't succesfull with my fermentation project. I dissolved sugar, yeast and oatmeal and put in an old apple and stuck the lot in a small 300ml plastic marge recipient with a hole in the lid. The smell wasn't too bad and there were some bubbles, but I didn't see any females around and no eggs in the cardboard trap. Mebbe try again with mango this time.
