Black Soldier Flies, Fish, and Vegetables in Symbiosis Greatly Reduce Food Waste

Wu Mengkun, the director of Yimi Community College in Chiayi county Taiwan, always makes sure to emphasize that the black soldier fly (BSF) is the most environmentally friendly way to compost food waste when explaining the 'BSF Fish Vegetable Symbiotic Ecological Cycle.'
Bugs aren't a cause for panic, in fact they're rather organic! BSF larvae play a key role in the system. Yimi Community College, in conjunction with Fanlu township elementary school, have constructed the 'BSF Fish Vegetable Symbiotic Ecological Cycle,' which they have not only successfully patented, but are now seeking to expand to solve the food waste crisis in adjacent townships through a crowdfunding platform .

According to Wu, the system begins by taking food waste from the community college and using it to rear BSF larva. When mature, these larvae then crawl to the exits of their containers and fall out into the fish tanks, where they are snatched up by the hungry fish, whose soiled water is then used to fertilize plants.

What's more, BSF are 55% protein and can substitute for fish feed. At present the 20-30 litres of BSF from the school's trash can supply enough feed for the daily needs of 100 fish.

Liu Xiuyan, principal of the elementary school says that the school continues to push for ecological conservation and the re-use of natural resources. Through this collaborative effort the students can observe how little seedlings gradually grow tall under their care, as well as get used the wriggling of the soldier flies and see how they can greatly reduce the volume of local food waste.

Currently, the school's fills two large buckets with leftovers every lunch time, which is still not enough to satisfy their 20-30 litres of soldier flies. As a result they have to leave the campus to seek out restaurants with waste - they can even use the waste solids from a soymilk shop to feed the flies.

The local Fanlu public housing waste management team also has cause to install such an efficient system for composting food waste and has sent people to study the course at the community college.

In the future, the school will add financial education course, letting the kids learn how to harvest the veggies themselves and learn about sales. Whatever is left after paying for the operating costs of the system will go towards the children's graduation trip and school supplies. Their initial 'customers' will the teaching staff and their own families.
