"people who read it during that period may still have an unbalanced understanding because of that"

That is a good point. Did you create an account with Wikipedia and click "Watch this page" for the BSF entry? That way you can keep track when people make changes to make sure they're correct and sourced correctly. It's too bad the article sourced in the "extremely rare" vs. "extremely often" part is in spanish.

Jay, I did in fact change the article and as I pointed out in my post (read the comment directly under the Wikipedia logo).

Since I made those initial edits I've checked back regularly to monitor the entry. One time I found that someone had maliciously changed data. You can see the edits I'm referring to at the following links.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hermetia_illucens&diff=prev&oldid=240105724

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hermetia_illucens&diff=next&oldid=240105724

I use Wikipedia all of the time, I just realize that the content can be easily changed by anyone for any reason. The Wiki BSF entry was flawed for a very long time and people who read it during that period may still have an unbalanced understanding because of that. The purpose of my post is to help people realize how Wikipedia works so that they can use it appropriately.

It sounds like you're intimidated by wikipedia. It is VERY easy to edit, really nothing to "learn" - that is the point. Wikipedia has the advantage over a "traditional" source in that it doesn't have a particular bias. If you would please go in there and just change it to be correct and back it up with references, I don't know how you can argue that it isn't reliable. If you don't go in there and change it, I don't know how you can complain.
With any other "traditional" source... if you disagree with it, complaining is your only option.

My friends and I all refer to Wiki as "the source of all knowledge......maybe." Its a great way of reminding ourselves that wiki is a lot like the teachings of an old man. Although there is a lot of information and wisdom being spread, even grandfathers wrong sometimes.

Hello DrFood, yes I did sign up to Wikipedia to change the entry, however it may be some time before I'm able to do it. I would need to learn the process and I'm a busy person. It would be hypocritical of me to modify the BSF entry without knowing exactly what I'm doing. I'm actually hoping this post will get the attention of someone who is already familiar with BSF and also the process of editing Wikipedia.

For the record I use Wikipedia all the time, but unlike many people I understand the nature of it. Most of the people reading my blog and researching BSF in general are in the 45 - 60 age group and many of them may take Wikipedia at face value.

Perhaps Wikipedia should consider including a prominent disclaimer on every page to help people understand the difference between it and a traditional reference source.

Thanks for the comment DrFood! :)

So, you signed up to Wikipedia and corrected the messed up page, right? That's how it works. I find Wikipedia to be a pretty good resource for uncontroversial information (I'd never look there for information about a political candidate.) It's actually pretty good on many drugs and diseases (I'm a pediatrician).

I believe you could add a whole section to the black soldier fly piece, including uploading a few more "friendly" photos, maybe even a photo of the biopod (well, there may be a problem if it's perceived that you're selling those).

Hey!! Nice page. Good work. I found out about Wikepedia a few years ago, but when I found out that it is just peeps like us posting their "knowledge" I stopped using it as a tool and more for fun. Hopefully, others did too.
